Dr. Roderick Rudder, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Planning & Development), Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Urban Development Commission (UDC) has been closely documenting the housing under its remit.

This was revealed by Director of the UDC, Derek Alleyne whose department has the responsibility of providing housing solutions, repairs and upgrades for persons living in urban communities as well as providing roads and footpaths for urban districts.

Alleyne stated, that for the past “three years” the government department has been collecting and storing data. His comments came as he spoke to the media during the Staff Entrepreneurial Showcase which was held during UDC’s Week of activities, to mark its 19th anniversary.

“We collect the data with smart phones. You go and you take your smart phone, you take your picture, you locate it and you bring it back in and you put it in the system. We have a very good technology team.”

He added the Commission is “now focussing on getting our GPS [Global Positioning System] in.”

“We are putting every house that we own on a system so that we can say what material it is made of [or] where it is it. At any time you go on the computer, the house is there [and] you know who is next door. We had a problem with doing inventory too often - so we took the bullet - we will digitalise everything. So every house that we have, we know every tenantry that we do, where it is, who is on it, and how much the land costs.” (MG)
