The Most Improved prize was awarded to Kwame Benjamin.
Participants in Camp Energy 2016 are being encouraged to share the skills they have learnt over the past three weeks with their peers when they return to school in September.
Barbados Defence Force (BDF) Chaplain, Reverend Esther Willoughby, offered this advice, while delivering the feature address during Friday’s Closing Ceremony for the Camp at The Cadet Campsite, Paragon Military Base, Christ Church. Camp Energy is organised by the BDF.
“Participants keep your focus. Do not slack in your riding. Prepare to take some of these skills to school and to your peers.”
Willoughby also encouraged the 72 campers to “continue to use your time wisely. Keep in contact with the friends you have made here.” She further advised them to remember the creator now that they are young. Meanwhile, speaking directly to the parents, she encouraged them to pray for, and with, their children continually.
Also offering advice to the campers was Project Officer with the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Jacqui Cuke. While giving the sponsors’ remarks, she urged participants to apply self-discipline daily and to “become a leader yourself one day and help
others become really good citizens of Barbados.”
This year’s Camp was held under the theme “Ten Years Growing & Thriving” and during the three-week period campers were exposed to the BDF’s agriculture and livestock programme.
They also took part in tours, visited the Geriatric Hospital, learnt how to line dance, play steel pan and make useful craft items from leather. Some of the items made and the skills learnt were showcased during the Closing Ceremony.
During Friday’s proceedings, awards were also presented to this year’s most outstanding campers.
The Most Helpful prize went to Nyasha Jones; the Most Improved prize was awarded to Kwame Benjamin; the Most Athletic prize was given to Josiah Boyce, while the Camp Spirit Award was presented to Alyssa Greenidge. The Blue team won the Sports Award.
Special Camp Energy Service Awards were presented to Camp Counsellors who have been involved in the Camp for the past ten
years. These were Colour Sargeant, Mariela Anthony, Sargeant Sonia Jones and Leading Seaman, Nicole Brathwaite. (MG)
