In its sixth year, the Cave Shepherd/ Berger Royale/ A1 Supermarkets National Primary School Awards were held on Sunday at the Kensington Oval, presenting prizes to schools for excellent work in deportment, sports, environment and sponsor awards thanks to Corporate Barbados.
Senator Harcourt Husbands, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education, asked the audience to express their appreciation to the founder of the awards, Ricardo Marshall. Husbands also spoke to the children being awarded and encouraged them to keep on the path of success.
“To you students – excellence is a journey. You are at the beginning of that journey and I want to encourage you; I want to implore you to build on all of the achievements you have had so far in your young lives, that in future we will see more successful citizens in this country,” said Husbands.
Beverley Parris, Principal of Lawrence T. Gay Primary School, gave the feature address which was entitled “Let’s Award Excellence while Encouraging Effort” and spoke about the “Three I’s” – Initiative, Integrity and Industry – giving practical examples and stories to illustrate these three developmental areas.
Cave Shepherd’s award for Best Deportment was received by Hilda Skeene Primary School and the Berger Royale Best Environment awards went to Hilda Skeene – 1st prize, All Saints – 2nd prize and 3rd prize went to Ellerton Primary School. Under the theme of “Protecting the Environment” in the Best Poster Competition, 1st Prize was awarded to Ignatius Byer Primary, 2nd Prize to St. Matthew’s Primary and 3rd prize to Lawrence T. Gay Primary School.
In addition, awards were given according to school zones. In zones 1 to 4, the Most Outstanding School award – sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken – went to Bayleys Primary School. (KPB)
