To ensure disabled students get the support they need whilst on campus and are able to participate in key activities, the UWI Guild of Students will be launching a new association called the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Association of Persons with Disabilities.
Guild President Olvine Holas revealed the above this week, during a press conference held on campus.
“One of the objectives of this Guild for this year, is to ensure that every person on campus is included. Our campus now hosts students with disabilities and sometimes when we speak of disabilities, we often speak of physical disabilities, but there are disabilities in other areas. So one of the things we decided to do this year also, is to launch a new club called the University of the West indies Cave Hill Association of Persons with Disabilities, so that our students with disabilities can also be included in the activities that we support here at the Cave Hill Campus and within the Guild of Students,” Holas said.
“Sometimes you have students who are interested in higher education, but they feel it will be challenging for them, because they have some sort of disability and we want them to know that Cave Hill caters for all and we welcome everyone here and once you are here, you will feel included,” he added.
To date, Holas noted that there are approximately two students on campus with a physical disability that can be seen. However, he stressed that there are many more with disabilities that may not be as obvious and the aim is to make these persons comfortable and to accommodate them as best as possible, so they too can excel in their academic pursuits.
