Sweet spouge music, old ballads, calypsos and even R&B filled the air in the Seaside Theatre on Monday night during the ‘Bajan Night’ event.
A perfect early Valentine’s Day outing for locals and tourists, this free concert was one of this week’s activities for the Holetown Festival. The annual Festival began last Sunday and it will conclude with the 40th Annual Banks/Coca Cola Street Fair on Saturday and the Queen of the Festival Pageant on Sunday.
Love and appreciation for good music was shown throughout the night by the audience as each performer graced the stage. Patrons, seated and standing in the outdoor area directly in front of the Surfside Bar and Restaurant, were entertained by some of Barbados’ most talented singers. These included Jamal Slocombe, Tony “Poser” Grazette and Azizi Clarke.
Seasoned singers, Donella Weekes-Oliver and Adrian “AC” Clarke, also graced the stage at the West coast venue on the evening. Weekes-Oliver treated the crowd to loved classics like Shirley Stuart’s ‘Beautiful and Unspoiled’ and Wendy Alleyne’s ‘Midnight Blue’. Meanwhile, there was lots of hand waving, foot tapping and dancing as Clarke sang his 2016 groovy song, ‘How We Fettin’. He additionally thrilled with spouge selections like ‘You’re No Good’ and ‘Need Someone Just to Love Me’.
The a cappella group, G-Syndicate, brought the curtain down on the show. The all-male group began their set with Rupee’s ‘Tempted To Touch’ before rendering hits like ‘Bye, Bye Love’, ‘Sno-cone’ and ‘Work’ to the delight of the small gathering.
The evening’s Master of Ceremonies, who kept everything flowing smoothly, was Janelle Walcott.
