Class 3 students of Roland Edwards Primary School had the opportunity of
planting the trees presented by The Productivity Council and the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat “Planting Pride” initiative. Looking on is teacher, Dominique Jordan and Principal of Roland Edwards, Michael Watson.
The Planting Pride initiative has moved on to the parish of St. Peter, this month.
On Thursday, Roland Edwards Primary School was the recipient of two fruit trees from the effort which is a partnership between The Productivity Council and the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat, being held under the theme “Securing Productivity Through our Communities”.
Through key stakeholders – the National Conservation Commission, the National Botanical Gardens and the Soil Conservation Commission – the Productivity Council and the Secretariat will be able to distribute 12 fruit trees across each parish and receive other technical guidance to successfully execute this programme.
“We recognise that there are not many fruit trees that are locally grown in Barbados. We are therefore making sure that when you get older and your children are grown, they will have fruit trees,” National Coordinator at the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat, Curtis Gibbons told students during the tree planting ceremony.
He also revealed that the trees being planted are Gooseberry and Custard Apple, and urged the students to care for them.
“Water them and make sure that they grow. It makes no sense having trees if they aren’t being taken care of. It is your responsibility as students of the Roland Edwards School to care for them,” Gibbons said. (TL)
