Governor General of Barbados, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave was happy to pay a visit to St. Winifred’s school, which is a mere stone’s throw away from his official residence. Here, he is accompanied by Aide-de-Camp Captain Ashton Lovell, Principal of St. Winifred’s, Kim Lewis and some of her students.
Students of St. Winifred’s School have been encouraged to draw inspiration from His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave’s example, and to consider how hard work, determination and a desire to dream big, could propel them to do great things.
Principal of St. Winifred’s, Kim Lewis called attention to the inspiring story of Governor General of Barbados, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave, as he paid an official visit to that school on Monday morning.
“Your Excellency, I must say that your story is quite an inspiration. Your example can’t but help inspire our students to dream big, to believe in the impossible, to be honest and true to their heritage,” Lewis told the Governor General.
“I am sure that the young Elliott, playing cricket on a childhood field in Boscobel or “borrowing” mangoes from his neighbour’s yard in his youth, could never imagine that his path in life would lead him to the highest office in our nation. I hope our students will see your achievements, recognise that they came out of hard work, determination and commitment and be willing to keep stepping ever forward through the successes and challenges that life holds,” she added.
Quoting the school’s Pantomime motto, Lewis stated, “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” (Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, On Giving ch.5, 1923)
She added, “Your Excellency, I think that this quote speaks of you and of your work and commitment. Thank you for all that you have given to our nation and most especially to our nation’s children”.
“May God bless you along the new path you will take when you demit office later this year. Thank you for your selfless service. Thank you for your kindness to our school and for coming to spend some time with us today,” the school Principal concluded. (RSM)
