Screams of jubilation erupted when five-year-old Chayim St. Hill was announced the overall winner of the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School’s Kite Flying Competition.
For his success, he was presented with the Best Kite on Show trophy and prize by Principal Marcia Best on Tuesday at the school.
A total of 24 pupils, drawn from all sections of the school, participated in the contest held under the theme, ‘Up The Thing’. Other prizes on the day were presented to Nailah Duncan for having the Biggest Kite on Show, Brent Gill for having the Smallest Kite on Show and Aasia Brice for having the Most Unusual Kite on Show.
Students were judged on design, creativity, if the kite flew, the duration the kite stayed in the air and their strength. A variety of diamond, triangle and box-shaped kites were flown by those who took part. The designs seen included that of a flower and characters such as Disney princesses, Spider-Man and Johnny Bravo. There was also a uniquely designed kite named after US President Donald Trump.
Physical Education Teacher, Nathaniel Boyce, described the school’s revamped contest as a success. He said the kites flown by the students were those designed by them with the help of their parents.
Adding to this, Best said before the day’s event was held, students were taught how to make and design kites.
“I think it is a good experience for the children to showcase their creativity and competitiveness as it relates to the kite flying,” she noted.
