Twenty-one pupils from the Maria Holder Nursery School in Gall Hill, Christ Church, accompanied by their teachers, paid a visit to senior citizens at the J&J Senior Citizens Home in Newton, in the same parish yesterday.

Senior teacher Kathryn Chatawan indicated that the community outreach session was the main activity planned to celebrate Child Month this May, but it was also embarked upon, under the Maria Holder Nursery School’s ongoing theme for the school year, which is “Celebrating 50 Years of Independence: Community, Cuisine, Culture”.

“Today we decided to come here to the J&J Senior Citizens Home to present a hamper. We decided to do it because we wanted to give back something to the community and since we are celebrating Child Month this month, we decided to do this venture,” she told members of the media.

Stressing that it was key for young children to learn from an early age the importance of reaching out to the community and giving back, Chatawan noted the valuable experience the children would also receive, by interacting with the senior citizens.

The children sang a number of songs for the seniors at the home, before presenting them with a hamper and afterwards, they were served with refreshments.

Chatawan noted that whilst this was the first official visit to the senior citizens home, it was not the first community outreach effort, since the school opened its doors last September. The students previously visited the nearby Oistins Complex to interact with vendors in the Fish Market and to see the various businesses that are set up in the general Oistins, Christ Church area, as part of their learning experience.

Shundelle Brathwaite, auxiliary nurse in charge of the morning shift, registered her pleasure in having the pupils visit the home, as she welcomed them with open arms. (RSM)
