Sweet victory for Brandon Byer Maloney

An elated, Brandon Byer Maloney celebrating winning the Republic Bank RightStart Primary Schools’ Speech Contest.

Mum, Andrea Maloney and Principal of the Gordon Walters Primary School, Tyrone Marshall, joined Branson Byer Maloney onstage to celebrate his victory.

There was no containing the delight expressed by Brandon Byer Maloney when he was declared the winner of the Republic Bank RightStart Primary Schools’ Speech Contest.

The Gordon Walters Primary School pupil was all smiles as he made his way to stage to collect his many prizes.

Byer Maloney competed against five other contestants during yesterday’s final at the Olympus Theatres. He spoke on the topic, “Legal System” and through his presentation he reminded the audience that laws govern our actions whether we like it or not.

The contest’s second and third prize winners were Darren King and Azariah Lowe-Parris respectively. Both students represented the Lawrence T Gay Primary School. King spoke on the topic “Bio-Diversity: What’s Your Gazelle?” and challenged persons not to magnify their difference but to look at their common goal. Meanwhile, Lowe-Parris dealt with the subject “Social Media Power In Numbers”.

The remaining finalists during the seventh annual staging of the competition were Christ Church Girls School’s T’Shani Jordan and Hindsbury Primary School’s Amariah Brathwaite and Adenike Watts.

Addressing attendees, Chief Judge and Toastmaster, David Parris, stated that overall there has been “an improvement over the years in the presentations.”

He further said that the day’s contest “was of an extremely high standard and indeed all the contestants are winners.” He also pointed out it was evident that there was much preparation and practice prior to the competition. He additionally noted
that there was excellent gestures and body language, use of humour and the “speeches were fresh and showed creativity in terms of the speech structure, the flow and the transitions as they moved from point to point.”
