Nikita placed second.

Marvay was visually impressive in his presentation.

Many looked forward to the Sweet Soca segment of Soca Royale and they were not disappointed. RPB took the crown from a field of nine.

His performance in position number eight set him head and shoulders above the competition, making him a clear-cut winner securing 90 points. The musical maestro looked crisp in his dazzling white apparel, cutting quite an impressive figure as he directed the masses and they willingly followed his every call.

He was followed in second position by Nikita with her ‘Carry Festival’. With an African print outfit that matched her trademark orange hair, the talented singer was engaging in her performance and though many may not have anticipated her placement, no one can deny that her performance was solid.

Third place went to Lil Rick who also retained his crown as the Party Monarch King of Barbados. His performance of the popular song ‘Blessing’ included an ode to varying aspects of the festival as he donned a costume provided by the Power X Four band.

He also made reference to some persons who were integral to the festival, but have now passed on. These included musician Adrian Husbands and band leader Renee Ratcliffe.

Marzville was one of the contestants who had a fantastic crowd response. He was eye-catching in his gold jacket and with his solid vocals and some disgruntled members of the crowd believed that he should have placed higher.

The judges had a really difficult task on their hands since the calibre of the music in this competition far exceeded that of the Party Monarch, which opened the evening’s musical battles. All of the artistes put forward their A-game.

Another of the outstanding performances on the night came from newcomer Shaquille with ‘Collateral’. While most contestants seemed determined to add fireworks to their presentation, regardless of whether or not they were needed, he kept his production true to the nature of his song.

His introduction consisted of a courtroom scene about the outstanding money he was owed. The trial was heard by the comedian Lord Zenn and the video thoroughly captivated audience members. With a vocally strong performance, he could have easily gained one of the top places.

Quite a few patrons also believed that veteran TC would have taken one of the top places. She created a panoramic scene on stage for ‘Paradise’. She was joined by reggae artiste Buggy Nhakente. Sanctuary was also solid in his offering.

Damian Marvay has built up a reputation for excellent presentations, which veer around from the traditional. ‘Antidote’ was no different. The colours he used were brilliant and his props told a story.

Defending monarch Edwin Yearwood did not bring his characteristic finesse to this performance. Although his visuals included cameos from athlete Akela Jones, American actress Vivica A. Fox and reggae superstar Tarrus Riley, his contribution lacked the usual magic that he captures when he is in his mode.

One has to wonder if he is saving everything for when he makes his appearance at the Pic-O-De-Crop finals. (ST)
