Students of Roland Edwards and Boscobel Primary Schools were presented with tablets from the Aron and Christina Foundation yesterday.
SEVENTY-EIGHT class three students from the two St. Peter-based primary schools are the latest recipients of the tablets from the Aron and Christina Foundation.
The students of Boscobel and Roland Edwards Primary Schools were happy as they received their tablets, during the presentation which took place at Roland Edwards, yesterday.
As the Foundation continues to work towards its goal of giving tablets to class 3 students of rural primary schools, the set of tablets distributed to the students at Boscobel, and Roland Edwards, were donated by the Thomson family.
The family came to live in Barbados, four months ago. Don Thomson, who spoke to the students briefly, remarked that he, his wife Mila, and sons Michael and Daniel, were honoured to be granted the opportunity to provide the children with the amazing piece of technology which would allow them to better function in today’s world.
Thomson told the students that while the tablets can be used to play games, they must be mindful that the devices must also be utilised to improve certain aspects of their school work.
“Technology is such a wonderful learning tool, not only in school, but also outside of school. Mila and I are here today; because we want to give you the opportunity to become empowered by technology.
“We want you to use it for good and use it to learn, not only about your studies; not only about Barbados, but about anything you want to learn about in the world.
“Technology is for fun, to play games, but most importantly, it is important to challenge us, to become curious. Technology is a wonderful thing…,” Thomson said.
Also encouraging the children to use their new devices for good, was Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate for St. Peter, Colin Jordan. Jordan remarked that while the Foundation has been giving out the tablets for numerous years, he interacts with a number of children throughout the parish, who would have received tablets in the past, and are still thankful that they were among those chosen to get their hands on the precious devices they dearly treasure.
“Appreciate the gift and let it be your window to the world. Through tablets, through computer technology, you can see what is happening all over the world, you can see what other people are doing in other places, you can learn from other
people and I want you to see these tablets as your windows,” Jordan said.
Aron Truss, one of the founders of the Foundation, told the students that the tablets were not being given to them as a reward, but rather as a gift to assist them with their school work. (AH)
