Henry Inniss, Senior Vice President and Head of the Life Division of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL), looks on as students of the Lodge School utilise the ten Dell Computers presented to the school’s Science and Technology Department, for use in its Music Lab.

The Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL) has partnered with the Lodge School, to help advance the school’s goal of engaging students in 21st century learning.

Henry Inniss, Senior Vice President and Head of the Life Division of the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL), presented ten Dell Computers to the Lodge School’s Science and Technology Department yesterday, for use in the school’s Music Lab, whilst acknowledging the importance of technological integration into the school’s curriculum.

“These ten computers that we are presenting here today, are a mere drop in the ocean. I know you would have started your IT strategy a while back and these will just help to move it forward a bit more… as we recognise it is a continuous process,” Inniss told staff, as well as fifth and sixth form students gathered.

“These computers will be used by students in the Music Lab in innovative ways, to help them to progress their learning at a much more rapid rate. Because of the prevalence of technology, most students will have two mobile phones with all kinds of Apps on them and they are very adept at technology. So you don’t want to have them moving from their own world, where they have so much technology available to them and then going to learn in the old way. So you want to have an extension from their personal lives into school life, where the type of learning is consistent and mention was made earlier... about the fact that the Lodge School is now preparing the 21st century learner, which embraces technology,” he added.

He meanwhile noted that “technology is everywhere” and it is the young ones who can easily navigate the technological world, even better than some adults can. He also stressed that technology’s use in the educational arena is beneficial, as it improves engagement, as well as knowledge retention.

Persons tend to retain what they need to learn better, when utilising some type of App or technological intervention, Inniss suggested, than when reading a book, which in his view has now become “old school”.

“As you learn through technology, you tend to retain what you learn for a lot longer,” he also commented. He meanwhile lauded the school for its push to create 21st century learners, whilst making good use of technology. (RSM)
