Confident, but not complacent.
That’s how Democratic Labour Party candidate for St. James South, Donville Inniss, feels about the upcoming general election as he faces not one, but possibly three other candidates who will be vying for that seat in the House of Assembly. He was speaking to The Barbados Advocate on Easter Monday as he hosted the annual St. James South Annual Kite Flying and Family Picnic at the Wanstead Ridge Park.
“I am very mindful that there are some constituents who are not happy with the Government for some of the policies and programmes we have had to pursue. I don’t think we have been as effective in communicating to some Barbadians as we ought to have been, and there is still in some instances ambiguity as to the future. So this election will indeed be a very challenging one and there is, and can be no room for complacency. There is a lot of work for all of us to do,” he indicated.
It is with that in mind, that Inniss said while he has a strong record of stewardship in the constituency, he is taking nothing for granted and will continue to converse with his constituents, as communication is the key to maintaining and building trust. To that end, he made it clear that his goal in St. James South is to continue to get out there and remind, and explain where necessary to his constituents, why Government had to take some of the decisions it did, as well as to let them know his views on the way forward not only for the constituency, but Barbados as a whole.
“My intention is to also ask for forgiveness where they think I may have been weak and to politely invite them to let us continue on this journey. We must recognise that what we need first and foremost are 30 Members of Parliament who are very passionate, not just about their constituencies and the families therein, but about this little island that we all have to call home,” he said.
