CORPORATE Barbados and other private donors were applauded for their commitment to ensuring that students of the Cave Hill Campus have access to critical financial resources to facilitate their studies and by offering internships.

They were lauded during the 15th Annual Student Awards Ceremony which was held in the Roy Marshall Teaching complex of the UWI Cave Hill Campus on Tuesday night. The ceremony allows the Campus to showcase and encourage further alignment with donors – corporate Barbados, the regional banking sector and private citizens.

Speaking on behalf of Campus Council Chair Sir Paul Altman, Deputy Principal Professor Clive Landis said it is no secret that access to opportunities, in many cases funding, is critical to the success of the students.

It is against this backdrop that he commended the three lead donors in the past academic year, namely CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Ltd., which donated 14 undergraduate scholarships valued at US$2 500 each for a total donation of US$35 000.

“I commend CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Ltd. for building a long term strategic partnership with the University, through the provision of undergraduate scholarships and internships,” he said.

SOL Caribbean was also highlighted for donating scholarships totalling $32 250. This includes two graduate student scholarships valued at US$15 000 each.

Professor Landis continued, “Such awards are critical for a research University such as the Cave Hill Campus to fund postgraduate research projects which are often of national and international importance. We therefore encourage our industry partners and private donors to follow the example set by SOL Caribbean to help align with the Cave Hill campus to develop a sector of interest: donors are quite free to specify the field of research they wish to support, thereby entering into a deliberate strategic partnership with the Cave Hill campus.”

He also highlighted the Anthony and Joy Bland Scholarship is awarded to three (3) students valued at $5 000 each: for a total of $15 000.

Against the backdrop of difficult financial times, Professor Landis noted that five new undergraduate awards for this academic year have been created. These are the Carlos Holder Memorial Scholarship, which is valued at $2 000 for the duration of the year. The Hinds Transport Services Scholarship, which is valued at $5 000 for the duration of the year. The Co-operators General Insurance Co. Ltd. (CGIL) Scholarship, which is valued at $5 000 for the duration of the year. The Edgar & Joan Hynam Scholarship, which is valued at $5 000 for the duration of the year and the Foster Foundation Scholarship Fund, which is valued at $2 000 for the duration of the year.

“Donors: you have shown through your benefaction your dedication to the development of these gifted students and by extension the advancement of Caribbean development, and the wider world. Your commitment to ensuring that students of the Cave Hill Campus have access to critical financial resources to facilitate their studies must be applauded,” he said. (JH)
