THE hike leader of the Barbados Hiking Association is describing the picture of garbage dumped in various parts of the island as an atrocious one.

George Medford, told The Barbados Advocate, following Sunday’s church service at the Rock Dundo, St Michael, The Church of Christ The King, that while on their weekly journey, hikers travel along cart roads and tracks, and pass the hills and the gulleys of Barbados, where they see the beauty and the ugliness of Barbados.

“And my fervent wish would be for us to desists from littering. It is very ugly and it is very embarrassing not only to us, but to those visitors who join us on these hikes,” he said.

Medford said that everything imaginable, in the form of household items is seen dumped, including old bed frames, mattresses, fridges, stoves, living room sets, large build ups of coconut shells, and animal carcases.

“Almost every year it seems to increase, rather than decrease and you really have to wonder if we take seriously caring God’s environment.

“If we are serious about caring for God’s environment and making it beautiful, we need to dispose of all our garbage properly, and by properly I mean in the official proper manner, rather than taking it from our homes and dumping it into someone’s cart road or backyard. It is a very ugly picture,” Medford said.

The Barbados Hiking Association, in associa-tion with the Barbados National Trust, has been hiking since January 1983. The hikes take place on Sundays. Annually, the members attend a church service together to thank God for and celebrate the Association. (AH)
