On a day that is recognised as the international day for workers, the Barbados Football Association (BFA) walked alongside the nation’s workforce yesterday in the 2018 Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) May Day Parade. With a compliment just shy of 200 persons, the local governing body for the “Beautiful Game” took to the streets to stand in solidarity with the workers.
With BFA staff, players of all the national teams, coaches and managers taking to the streets of Barbados under the BWU’s banner, the group wore shirts emblazoned with their “Stop the Violence” campaign. The campaign which was launched two years ago, is aimed at using the sport as a platform to raise awareness and alleviate the plague of violence.
Both male and female players from the Under-15, Under-17, Under-20 and senior teams made the trek from the Frank Walcott statue on Culloden Road to Bay Street, and BFA President Randolph “Randy” Harris told The Barbados Advocate that the plan was to use the youth to drive the awareness.
“What the BFA has done today is to bring out the peers of our young people who are committing violent crime in Barbados. What we want to do here is to show them that there is another way of living because life is sacred and we can’t continue to let our young people fall by the wayside. So we come here today as a group. These are all of our national players in all divisions and both men and women. So we are happy and honoured to have them on the road to make a statement that we must stop violence.” he said. (MP)
