On Friday, the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) will be discussing outstanding matters with the Ministry of the Civil Service.

Head of the BWU Toni Moore highlighted that while the Ministry of Civil Service has met with the National Union of Public Workers on several occasions, it was slated to have its first meeting with her union on Friday, at which time two of the representative agency’s concerns were expected to be looked at.

“One was the concern to have temporary employees with three years or more, to have them regularised and have them secured with permanent status and … we have the money proposal of 15 percent over two years. We expect that on Friday, we will hear a presentation from the Ministry of Civil Service and we will begin our discussions to see how close we can get to our 15, and how far away we can get from their zero,” she said, noting that these were the critical issues for the membership.

In addition, she stated that with Friday being ‘World Day for Decent Work’,  the BWU will be launching a major campaign that was going to be preoccupying its attention over the next 12 months.

She made the comments during an interview with media yesterday at the Solidarity House headquarters of the BWU, as it hosted an open day and health fair for its members and several businesses in celebration of its 75th anniversary.

“We believe in the theme of wellness because we believe in that well-known adage that the health of a nation is the wealth of a nation. So often, our workers would want us to focus on the financial tangibles in terms of salary or wage increase, uniform benefits and so on in the workplace, but today our focus is strictly on health because we recognise that the health of our workforce is impacting our productivity in a number of different ways,” she stated.
