Efforts are on by Cancer Support Services (CSS) to raise the public’s awareness about colon cancer.

CSS President, Henderson Griffith said this will be done through its educational initiative which it will be rolling out “within the next couple months.”

“We are trying to launch a colon cancer initiative to help educate Barbadians on the importance of getting check for colon cancer in particular. It affects both men and women – so it doesn’t discriminate – and we need as much help as we can with the initiative; it is not going to be cheap. First, we will start with education and then… we will have a focus in the community with testing and that kind of thing,” he said.

Griffith comments came while speaking to the media on Friday at the CSS headquarters at Dayrells Court Business Centre in Dayrells Road, Christ Church. During this event, a presentation was made to the organisation by Zotbelle Beauty. Owner of the company, which offers hair and make-up services, D’borah Blenman made a donation of over $700 to CSS.

Blenman explained that the decision was taken to make the donation because CSS assisted her mom and herself during their journey with cancer. The funds handed over were donated by the company’s staff and its clients.

She expressed her appreciation for the support while stating that “Cancer Support Services, are not just counselling but also sometimes supports in terms of indirect financial assistance. I remember even things like wheelchairs and walkers that may be needed, Cancer Support Services provided for myself and my family, and I am sure that they are doing it for many more individuals.”

Griffith thanked Blenman for her generosity. He said that “funds are getting scarce in this day and age with all the tightness in the economy. So anything we can get, every little bit helps and I hope that many other people follow in your footsteps, and look at what we are doing and try to help us out.” (MG)
