Aspiring creatives would be pleased to know that they can now gain a degree in film, theatre or dance at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, as the university seeks to officially establish a Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts.

This was revealed by Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau, as she delivered remarks during a press conference that took place at the institution on Friday.

“Earlier today I tabled and gained approval for a proposal to establish a new Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts at the Cave Hill Campus. The Faculty will provide intellectual leadership and career opportunities in the cultural industries,” she said.

“Additionally, the current structure will ensure institutional prominence and marketing visibility for the degrees in cultural studies in film, dance and theatre; and it is important to note that this new faculty will be established with no additional cost for physical resources or staff, but with tremendous economic and social benefits to The UWI Cave Hill Campus.”

Barriteau highlighted that even though The UWI established the Faculty of Sport in 2017. this would be the latest faculty at the Cave Hill Campus since the establishment of the Faculty of Law in 1970.

With the establishment of this new faculty, Barriteau noted that she expected great enrollment within the programme as students would now be able to acquire a degree in film, theatre and dance.

She stated that the plan was to start with a small catchment of ten to 20 students and grow from there, as she is certain that the Faculty would be successful.

“Two weeks ago I was in Jamaica and the Vice-Chancellor introduced me to the Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica and told her about my coming proposal to create a Faculty of Culture and she was so excited, she said ‘Professor Barriteau, the Cuban Government will send you professors of dance and theatre. We don’t have money, but we have signed a MOU with the Vice- Chancellor of the UWI in Havana and we exchanged professors’,” she recalled.

Barriteau stated that this meant that there were persons waiting to bring their expertise to the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts.
