Shoppers dashed to grocery stores to stock up on supplies ahead of Tropical Storm Dorian.
They heeded Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s advice during an address to the nation on Sunday afternoon to be prepared.
Word was given that supermarkets were to remain open until 9 p.m. on Sunday, but soon after official word was given by the PM that a tropical storm warning was in effect for the island, Barbadians and visitors alike immediately flocked both to the supermarkets and gas stations.
At Massy Warrens branch, customers stocked up on quantities of bottled water. Store Manager Charles Lynch confirmed that the main purchase was indeed water and that staff were busy restocking shelves.
“From the time of the announcement, persons have been basically making their way to the supermarket. The main purchase at our Warrens location has been water and as you can see, we have been restocking the shelves and we also have pallets with water placed throughout the store. Customers have also been stocking up on items like biscuits, but also persons could be seen generally shopping,” he said, also noting that water woes in several communities resulted in persons purchasing bottles of water.
“I guess after what happened in Dominica and other countries across the region in recent years, it’s better to be prepared than sorry,” one customer told The Barbados Advocate.
