Students of the Combermere School recently were brought up to scratch on how they could be cyber smart, by engaging in strategic practices to ensure that they remain safe, while using the Internet.
Cyber security professionals from KPMG recently hosted a cyber-security educational session for the students, as part of KPMG’s annual Cyber Day Initiative. Ian Wood, Senior Manager at KPMG and Vanessa Coma, KPMG’s Business Advisor, visited the school, to share the top things young people need to know about cyber security.
The students were advised how to keep their identity safe online, how to avoid cyber criminals gaining access
to their social media accounts and technological devices, how to look out for and avoid the use of fake apps and websites, amongst other things. They were also given a list of Dos and Don’ts in relation to the use of social media and chief amongst the advice was the caution not to share anything online that could jeopardise their reputation and how to secure their various online accounts.
In terms of cyber bullying, they were warned not to become cyber bullies, by intimidating others online or sharing negative information about them that could do them harm and they were also advised to report incidents of cyber bullying that happen to them, to trusted adults.
Wood meanwhile said of the
initiative which was well received by students and teachers alike, “This is the third annual KPMG Cyber Day Initiative. This something that that we do globally. We have done it in our
offices in the Caribbean- in Barbados, in Antigua St. Vincent and St. Lucia,
so we have done schools across the region”.
