Deputy Principal of the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Professor Winston Moore.

THE University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus has been responsible for generating approximately two hundred million dollars in additional spending in Barbados.

Deputy Principal of the Campus, Professor Winston Moore, disclosed this as he stated the findings of a report conducted in 2014. This report looked at the economic impact the campus has made locally.

Moore at the time was addressing Thursday’s Faculty of Law Library Showcase on Campus. This Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) event was attended by visiting representatives of Canada’s Parliament. Professor Moore shared the information as he spoke generally about the tertiary institution.

“In 2014, I chaired a small working group that investigated the economic impact of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. That report for the first time quantified the economic photoprint of the Cave Hill Campus and it estimated that the campus generated approximately two hundred million dollars in additional spending here in Barbados.”

He further said that in addition to this spending that is generated, the campus “also provides a number of non-quantifiable benefits to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean including the specialist skills that are provided in the areas of health, law, as well as the arts, just to name a few”.

Going into greater detail about some areas, Professor Moore said in the Eastern Caribbean, the campus is “also a significant investor in a number of interesting areas of research and development through our Centre for Food Security and Entrepreneurship. Work has begun with the Government of St. Vincent in regard to the rehabilitation of the country’s arrowroot industry. We have conducted surveys in Dominica in regard to medicinal herbs and again with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to provide support and guidance in regard to medicinal cannabis as well”.
