Her Excellency, the Governor General of Barbados, Dame Sandra Mason, got the opportunity to tour the Annual Flower and Garden Show of the Barbados Horticulture Society (BHS) at Balls Plantation over the weekend.
She was guided through the exhibition by the President of the BHS, Jennifer Weetch, the Governor General was able to view the incredible showcase of award winning plants and flowers and commented that she was impressed by the colourful display.
Reverend Dr Wayne Ramsey, Vice President of the BHS told The Barbados Advocate that they were excited to be hosting this year’s show and believed that the quality of the show had risen when compared to last year’s show and attributed this to the increase in entrants this year.
He explained that there were a variety of flowers on display including cacti, fruits and vegetables and stated that this evening, there will be an awards ceremony where they would be giving prizes to those persons who won in their respective categories.
The Vice President expressed that he believed the response from the public this year was encouraging, adding that the new wine bar that was introduced this year was extremely successful.
“I think having a show like this is important because it gives people the opportunity to come and fellowship with each other. You find that you get the flower and plants enthusiasts coming out to the show because some of them are looking for new varieties, and foliage and plants and when they come they get to learn how to care for their orchids and also sometimes we host workshops which are very hands on,” he said.
He added that inspectors also attended the shows and taught persons how to care for their diseased plants.
Ramsey noted that the public’s response has been “very good to us in supporting the show and the various members of the affiliate societies have been also been encouraging” and it is his hope for the show to continue to grow within the coming years.
