November 25th has been designated “Crash Free Friday” by the Barbados Road Safety Association (BRSA).

On this day BRSA is encouraging all road users to work towards zero accidents.

“The initiative is to raise awareness of safe driving and help create a safe environment for all road users. The aim is to put the emphasis back on the people who can make a real difference –those who use the roads. It is intended to provide a platform for people to start thinking consciously about driving safely, not only for one day, but for every day of the year,” BRSA President, Sharmane Roland-Bowen explained.

She is therefore asking Barbadians to make a personal commitment, by signing on to the pledge and adhere to the rules therein, especially on this day.

During the launch held at Alpha 126 Traffic School, Rendezvous Court, Christ Church on Tuesday, she thanked sponsors Adopt-A-Kilometre and the Caribbean Association of Security Professional and partner the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) for embracing the road safety initiative.

The President revealed that Adopt-A-Kilometre will be providing BRSA with signage along the highway. “I told Andrew Clarke of Adopt-A-Kilometre that this is going to be the most widely read sign because it is going state how my fatalities are on our roads to date – comparing to the previous year and it will be updated.”

Roland-Bowen also revealed that those persons who recorded no collisions or no police report on “Crash Free Friday” will be eligible to win prizes sponsored by Oral Reid, Chairman of the Caribbean Association of Security Professionals. The first prize will be Road Tax paid up to $400; second prize, payment of driver’s license for five years; and third prize, $100 in gas/diesel.

Several companies and organisations took the opportunity to pledge their support to the BRSA initiative during the launch. These included - Actavo, Alliance of Public Transport Owners, Barbados Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, The Motorcycling Fraternity of Barbados, Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre (SBRC) and Massy (Barbados) Limited.

Health and Safety Manager at Massy, Brian Reid is urging motorists to always exercise caution on our roads.

“Always refrain from distracted driving and it won’t just be a “Crash Free Friday” that we are focusing on, or Road Safety Month for November, but every time we get into our vehicles we make the committed effort to ensure that we get from our location to our destination safely,” he said. (TL)
