IN light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing impact on Barbados, Barbadians are being asked to participate in a Day of Prayer, which will be held on Sunday, so prayers can be offered up for the nation.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley recently announced the above, noting that a number of priests had reached out to her, asking for such a day.

“I received some calls from a number of priests today (Thursday) and they have all asked for a Day of Prayer and I would like to advise that we are going to agree that on Sunday, there ought to be a Day of Prayer for the whole nation, as we embark on this new unchartered territory,” Prime Minister Mottley indicated.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that people have to go church in the same way, but wherever we are in Barbados and they will announce those arrangements themselves or through the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs. (So) wherever we are, we will have that Sunday as a Day of Prayer because we know that for the past 300 years, the Lord has been the people’s guide, with Him still on the people’s side, we have no doubts nor fears,” the PM further stated.

Up to press time, Barbados had on record six confirmed cases of COVID-19. Earlier in the week, Government revealed the first two cases, that of a 48-year-old visitor who arrived in Barbados on March 13 from the United States (US) and a 39-year-old Barbadian female who recently returned to the country from the US. Then later in the week came additional reports that there were four additional cases – the spouse of the visiting female who was one of the first two people to be tested and found positive; a 60-year-old Barbadian who arrived over the weekend from New York and who developed symptoms soon after arriving in Barbados; and a male in his 20s and a female in her 60s, both of whom recently returned to the island from the United States.

Meanwhile, Barbadians are being encouraged to follow all the necessary precautions given by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and reputable public health institutions, to avoid either catching or spreading COVID-19. (RSM)
