A steady flow of traffic at Cheapside in Bridgetown yesterday morning.

It was a busy Saturday morning at Cheapside, Bridgetown, St. Michael yesterday, as Barbadians sought to buy various types of farm produce, from select vendors.

The Barbados Advocate noticed however, that for those handpicking and purchasing their produce from their preferred vendors alongside the roadside, there was not much attention paid to the practice of social distancing in some instances, as recommended by the health authorities, during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Given that Good Friday has passed, Easter Sunday is upon us and the Easter Monday bank holiday is to come, it seems that there was also a great deal of traffic on the streets as well, as Barbadians moved to and fro to get essential items, to help them ride out the Easter Weekend.

Later that day, reports are that it was advised that the Cheapside Market be closed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to keep everyone safe. Open back trucks with speakers and with personnel on microphones traversed the area, accompanied by members of the Royal Barbados Police Force on motorbikes, advising members of the public about how to stop the spread of the virus, all the while playing key jingles about COVID-19. Over the loud speakers, key personnel were heard advising those in the area that the market would have to close, as soon as possible.
