COME November 28th, the students and staff of the Lawrence T. Gay Memorial Primary School will be in position to play their part in the Human Chain Link, after being given a helping hand by the Barbados Light and Power Company.
Yesterday, Principal Beverley Parris was presented with a cheque by the island’s sole energy provider, towards transportation costs for the Spooner’s Hill institution, who have to make their way to the Spring Garden Highway for their leg of the effort.
During a special assembly held yesterday at the school, the Chief Education Officer, Karen Best, who is heading the initiative, which needs a minimum of 92 000 persons, and her Deputy, Joy Adamson, along with representatives of Barbados Light and Power, were in attendance.
Manager of Communications and Government Relations, Jackie Marshall-Clarke, who was in the first attempt of the chain back in 1979, told the students that her company was pleased to be lending assistance.
“Light and Power is proud to be a part of the 50th anniversary and the activities, because we believe that we have been a key company supporting the island of Barbados in helping it to get to this stage. When I think back about our
history and where we came from, and what we do now, we know how important we are to you,” she said.
Going on to enlighten the youngsters on the importance of energy, Marshall-Clarke also explained that outside of providing power, the company had a heavy hand in bringing Barbados to where it is now, and only wished to continue in the same vein.
“Putting aside that critical role that we play, we also play another role that persons don’t often remember us for, and that is our support of our communities and our support of our youth and our support of our schools. So that is why when we heard that your school was going to be in the human chain link and that your position is on the Spring Garden Highway, we decided to support you, because our generating plant is going to be right behind you when you stand,” she said.
