There is a call for all of Barbados to stand with like-minded persons
from across the globe today as the Caribbean Movement for Peace and
Integration (CMPI) demands to have the powers that be ‘Take your knee
off our neck!’. With many nations across the world joining with Black
Lives Matter protesters in the United States of America, the CMPI is
joining the fray and asking the rest of Barbados to stand with them.
With the organisation hosting a two and a half-hour protest just
outside the US Embassy on Wildey Road today, the local authorities
have mandated that only 10 persons are allowed to take part. However,
representatives have come up with creative responses to get their
point across and spokesperson David Denny filled The Barbados Advocate
in on the updates yesterday.
“We are asking everybody in Barbados to dress in black tomorrow
(today). And we are referring to tomorrow as ‘Black Saturday’. The
reason why is because Police grant us permission to only allow 10
persons to protest and there are hundreds of people in Barbados who
have expressed an interest in being able to protest. So we are saying
that people can dress in black tomorrow and protest in their community
by dressing in black and that in itself will show solidarity with our
protest,” he said.
Noting that the new move on site was to allow everyone a chance to
protest by assigning 10-minute blocks to persons, Denny added that he
hoped that those ‘protesting’ at home would also share their efforts.
“We are asking people to dress in black. They can protest from within
their community and post it on Facebook, so that the world can see
that Barbados is in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the
States,” he said before revealing that any content could be shared or
tagged to his own Facebook page @David Denny. (MP)
