THE brownish haze of dust blanketing the island was unmistakable
yesterday as Barbados joined the list of countries being affected by
Sahara Dust.

As a result, a severe dust advisory was issued yesterday at 12:05 p.m.
and was expected to be valid until 6 p.m. yesterday evening.

Meteorologist Tia Browne from the Barbados Meteorological Services
explained that strong winds associated with the Atlantic high pressure
system had been transporting significant amounts of dust haze across
the island during the morning.

She added that a slight decrease was noticeable in the afternoon with
the forecast indicating a further decrease expected last night. By
today, concentrations of dust haze are expected to be slight. By
Friday, June 19, Browne said a Tropical Wave is expected to affect the
island and during this time, concentrations of dust haze are expected
to remain slight.

“The next dust outbreak is expected to be on Saturday, June 20 and
continue through to Sunday, June 21. Persons with respiratory issues
or allergies are being asked to travel with or have close at hand
any/all medications in case of emergency. Marine users should stay
close to shore, particularly if GPS is not in use on the vessel.
Closely monitor the forecast for any possible deterioration.”

Many persons have already taken to social media complaining of
headaches and sinus pressure, which are just two of the symptoms
caused by Sahara Dust. Asthma sufferers and persons with respiratory
illnesses generally get the brunt of the blow when the Saharan Dust
hits. People with allergy issues also suffer. Symptoms can include
trouble breathing, asthma attacks, incessant sneezing, swelling of the
throat and eyes, coughing, watery and itchy eyes, and runny and stuffy
nose. (JH)
