The official residence of the British High Commission was the scene yesterday for the celebration of 50 years of a strong and close relationship between the United Kingdom and an independent Barbados.
In the presence of the Broken Trident, Senator the Hon. Maxine McClean and other key contacts in the Government of Barbados and British High Commission’s staff toasted the ongoing links between the two countries. Senator McClean met the longest serving member of staff, Roger Inniss, the High Commission’s driver for over 30 years, and Jamal Prescod, the newly recruited consular officer. She also met the heads of the different departments within the High Commission.
The Minister was shown around a display of images from ‘50 Words for Barbados 50’, an exhibition commemorating 50 years of Barbados’ Independence by the photographer Alex Bell.
The images were first displayed at the Museum of London Docklands in August 2016, at a weekend devoted to celebrating Barbados and all things Barbadian.
A message of congratulations to Barbados from Baroness Anelay – the British Minister with responsibility for the Caribbean – was read out.
She welcomed the two countries’ unique relationship based on a shared history and shared future, as well as their common values, such as democracy, respect and community.
