Unemployment due to the new coronavirus has forced families to reach out to a local community organisation in order to put food on their tables.
The Public Service and Welfare Committee of the Lions Club of Barbados South, thereby standing by its mission of “serving families and persons in Barbados”, has stepped up to the plate and began providing food hampers.
When the Barbados Advocate met up with the Committee’s Chairperson, Lion Corlis Weekes-Grazette, she was at the time making deliveries to households that Lions South have committed to assisting during the months of July to September.
“From July 1st the Committee embarked on a project supplying three households with food hampers. Those families selected have been receiving a hamper once a month for three months.
“Some of these persons reached out to the Lions Club of Barbados South through our Facebook page, while we would have been informed about others,” she said, revealing that a laid off hotel worker is among the individuals that Lions South has been assisting.
“We get information that those individuals aren’t currently working – persons who worked in different areas, but are now home for several months due to COVID-19.”
“We give them hope that for three months they could depend on the Lions to bring food to their tables. Now that the third month is here, I explained to those families that we will see how best we can still help. But, after September, I want to move onto three other families because there are more persons out there who need help,” Lion Weekes-Grazette pointed out.
Not only persons struggling since COVID have been beneficiaries of the food hamper project, as Lions South has been continuing to assist fire victims within their catchment area. (TL)
