David Denny, General Secretary of the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI).

THE Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration is in full support of Government’s move to take the next logical step toward full sovereignty, by becoming a Republic by the 55th Anniversary of Independence.

The announcement came on Tuesday, as Governor General of Barbados, Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason delivered the Throne Speech, as the Parliament of Barbados opened a second session under the leadership of the Barbados Labour Party administration, which is headed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. That Speech outlined government’s policies and programmes, ahead of the new session of Parliament.

David Denny, General Secretary of the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI), in a statement issued Tuesday, noted that the movement is in support of the ideas and positions laid out in the Throne Speech and chief amongst them, the decision to become a Republic by November 30, 2021.

“I am very happy and I am very supportive of this Throne Speech, by the Barbados Labour Party government. This speech has created the conditions for many poor working class people in Barbados, during this COVID-19 period,” Denny said.

“I think the government of Barbados understands many of the issues that are affecting our working class people and our movement will support aggressive action. We are also very happy to note that the Government of Barbados will work towards organising for Barbados to become a Republic, by the 30th of November 2021. This is a very progressive move. It is a move that we have been fighting for and we are happy to know that the government of Barbados will work towards that,” Denny further asserted.

He however noted, “The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration would like to encourage the Government of Barbados to create the conditions for the people of Barbados to discuss the type of Republic that would be suited for our Barbadian community and that will respect the citizens of Barbados. We would also like to see a Commission that creates the conditions for average working class people, to participate in that process.”

Denny also publicly noted the CMPI’s pleasure with the announcement made of the intention to extend the list of National Heroes on the island.

“We want to recommend to the government, that they include Israel Lovell and Nanny Grigg in that list of national heroes,” he commented.

He added, “We are also happy the government of Barbados is dealing with the marijuana situation.”

“So our movement wants to say that we fully back the Government of Barbados, in relation to these ideas that were presented in the Throne Speech,” Denny stated. (RSM)
