Twenty-one students from the Ellerslie Secondary School were given a special opportunity to train in the latest tele and video conferencing technology at the UWI Open Campus at Cave Hill on November 23.
The session which was entitled “Communications Part III: Use of tele and video conferencing, Zoom” was held in Studio 2 of the UWI Open Campus on Thursday. Facilitator of the session, Campus Officer of Alumni Relations in the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal, The University of the West Indies, Sandra Griffith-Carrington has worked closely with the school in the past year; as UWI Open Campus has provided training through the “Preparing Today for Tomorrow’s Challenges” programme.
On Thursday as part of this programme, students saw a presentation on the usage of tele and video conferencing technology given by Kumar Hinds.
There was also a “A Virtual Reality: The Value of Education” session by Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks from Anguilla and a “Meet and Greet” with President of the Barbados Association of Office Professionals (BAOP), Clovine Leslie, a former student of the Ellerslie School; other past students and Dr. Pamela Dottin, Quality Assurance Officer, who gave a motivational speech.
Other schools participating in the programme which received training earlier this monthare Frederick Smith Secondary and St. George Secondary School. Students from St. George Secondary School received their motivational speech from Ricardo Marshall, former student and brother of Attorney-at-Law and MP, Dale Marshall; while Deanna Noel from Dominica facilitated the session on “The Value of Education”.
Students from Frederick Smith Secondary received a presentation from Dr. Lora Woodall on “The Value of Education”, Professor Emerita Vivienne Roberts on “Effective Communication” and Celia Davidson-Francis, Director of Alumni Relations from Jamaica gave the motivational speech. Kumar Hinds began both sessions with a practical demonstration on tele/video conferencing. Alex Cumberbatch also addressed both schools on “The Importance of Proper Social Media Use”.
Dr. Luz Longsworth, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal also gave remarks from her varied locations by Zoom from Belize, Jamaica and in person, here in Barbados.
