Some of the popular novelty items found on Broad Street for the 50th Anniversary.
Bridgetown was heavy with vehicular traffic and pedestrians as Barbadians took the time to finish their shopping for the island’s 50th Anniversary.
AS November comes to a close, many shoppers are taking to the City to pick up their last minute memorabilia for Barbados’ 50th anniversary.
The Barbados Advocate visited Bridgetown on Monday and spoke to some business owners and managers in the stores and malls along and around Broad Street to get an idea of shoppers’ attitude towards the Golden Jubilee. Around 2 p.m., vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the City was at its peak. As it was end of month, many Barbadians were lining up in the commercial banks and ATMs to conduct their business. However, despite the busy sidewalks and roadways, some stores in one of the major malls did not see the traffic that was anticipated for the celebrations.
The retail and apparel stores which focused on independence and 50th anniversary memorabilia feared better, as most shoppers wanted to have momentos for November. One store owner in City Centre Mall said the popular items were the T-shirts which stated “Straight Outta Barbados”.
Well-known novelty store, Voyager, on Lower Broad Street, had several items such as 50th Anniversary mugs and pins, and these items were in demand. Even the street drink vendor saw the entrepeneurial opportunities, and he could be seen on Broad Street selling miniature Barbadian flags.
