The Cave Hill Law Society has launched the President’s Grant to assist students in meeting the cost of their legal education, as The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Faculty of Law continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

President of the Society, Quincy Jones made the announcement at a recent Dean’s List Awards ceremony, where 65 students from the Faculty of Law were recognised for their outstanding performance in Semester 2 of the 2019-2020 academic year.

According to Jones, as part of the grant, one individual from each year, and an executive member of the Law Society will receive a special scholarship worth BDS $500.

The selection panel included Dr. Jason Haynes, Dr. Antonius Hippolyte and Alana Lancaster, and the winners will be announced during the upcoming Law Week which runs from February 21-27, 2021.

Jones also congratulated the Dean’s List awardees on their success, especially in light of the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have all been through a very turbulent year. Nevertheless… challenging circumstances cannot break a true warrior. Our cohort (members) are warriors,” he said, adding that the students and faculty never wavered in their dedication and commitment.

Meanwhile Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Mohsen al Attar, praised the students’ “triumph of spirit” amidst the many challenges they encountered during the year, and urged them to continue setting high standards for themselves. “Because you don’t want to be the person who peaked in the Law Faculty. You don’t want to be the person who peaked at Law School, or who peaked during their qualification

period. You want to be the person who achieved the highest standards every stage,” he said.

“This success that you have achieved today, is a success that is shared by your families, by your friends, by your faculty, by this university, by the state, by this region. And this region is in dire need of the success that you have achieved…This region needs you to see this as a stepping stone towards a far brighter Caribbean future, and that is what you have taken a step towards today, he added.

Attorney-at-Law, Anthony Francis-Worrell lauded the Faculty on its 50th anniversary, and reminded the students that it stands today as a beacon of excellence throughout the region.

He also highlighted the importance of regional integration at this stage of The UWI and the Caribbean’s development: “If ever there was a time to come together as a region, that time is now. In the same manner, it is the time for the body of the Faculty of Law to come together to ensure excellence. That time is now.

“What we must understand here today is that the excellence of the faculty does not end there at the Faculty, it spreads. And it is your duty, awardees, irrespective of where you end up, to carry the beacon of excellence, the traditions and practices of sound teaching and learning, and to illuminate the region and this world,” Francis-Worrell said.
