Shoppers were flowing in and out of Popular Discounts in the City.

THE Christmas rush is still in full effect and supermarkets in and around Bridgetown along with stores are seeing a continued increase of activity.

With Christmas just one day away, The Barbados Advocate visited Bridgetown to get a glimpse of the last-minute rush for gifts, household items and food stuff by Barbadians. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has hit families hard and made life difficult for many, especially financially, there is still enough for persons to make an attempt to enjoy the season by giving to others as well as taking care of the household.

One lady stated that she wished that there was more money in her bank account,  but she was thankful for what she had.

“I was laid off during the lockdown and just went back to work, a couple weeks now. I do not have much, but I want to bless my children and grandchildren with a little something for the holidays,” she said.

Though there is significant vehicular and foot traffic in the City, some stores still were quieter than previous seasons and one store owner explained that he believed it was because of the layoffs and also people being careful with their money.

“We cannot complain but we have noticed that, yes there is a rush now Christmas is almost here, but it is not the same as before. I am just happy that I have my staff working again and we will have at least something to celebrate this Christmas,” said the owner.

The hustle and bustle and rubbing shoulders could be seen all over Bridgetown, including the financial institutions, but despite this rush, people still were ensuring to adhere to the health and safety protocols and wore masks, at least for the most part. There was also a strong police presence in the alleys as law enforcement patrolled the streets during a season where pickpockets tend to prey on unsuspecting shoppers. (AS)
