Barbadian drivers and pedestrians had to travel with caution yesterday as the island experienced flash flooding conditions.
The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) issued its Flash-Flood Warning at 1:03 p.m. A trough system was affecting Barbados resulting in moderate to heavy showers occurring across sections of the island. It was predicted that there would be maximum rainfall accumulations of 15.0 mm to 25.0 mm. The alert was valid from 1:00 pm, January 6, 2021, until 4 pm January 6, 2021.
A flash-flood warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period (generally less than six hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.
The Barbados Advocate contacted the BMS and spoke briefly to acting senior meteorologist, Tia Browne. She explained that the agency was anticipating instability during the week and a Flash Flood Watch was issued before the warning on Wednesday.
She noted that Barbados can expect an increase in rainfall but not necessarily heavy rainfall in the coming months.
The region is currently under the La Niña weather phenomenon which is categorised by cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall.
