The hulking mass looms over a bus stop on the heavily-used Pine Road.
There is a call coming from concerned members of the public to have the authorities address an issue that could possibly spell disaster if the worst occurs. Residents of Pine Road have reached out to The Barbados Advocate seeking to have their worries heard by the relevant government agency as it relates to a large rubber tree, which makes its presence felt on the heavily-used thoroughfare.
In a letter that was dated January 20th, 2021, one of the residents of the area expressed a measure of worry over the massive tree that looms over a bus-stop on the busy street. Writing that the tree was growing wildly out of an unoccupied building on the main road, the concerned resident stated that the tree “appears in danger of falling”.
Harkening back to a massive mahogany tree that fell on Martindale's Road at the St. Michael School just last year and the one that fell more recently on the same street at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital compound, the residents of the area fear that a similar incident could possibly occur as they described the giant. “This tree is massive and on many occasions with high wind it is observed to be shaking. There is a bus stop that separates part of the tree from Pine Road. If this tree falls, there could be several injuries if anyone is under the bus stop and shelter or walking, riding or being transported along Pine Road,” it read.
With many persons traveling the road at all times of day and with several others using the bus stop under the tree as well as the adjacent one, which is also very close by, the residents are calling for some action before it is too late. “Calls to the environment department to address the matter have fallen on deaf ears. We hope the PM, the government agencies and the MP for the area are proactive and get this tree felled or massively trimmed and no one gets hurt,” the letter stated. (MP)
