During a mass meeting held at Top Rock, Christ Church on Sunday night, several members of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) took to the podium to highlight and discuss the issues which they deem to be detrimental to the development of Barbados.

St. James North MP Edmund Hinkson, led this charge as he noted that ministries such as Housing, Education, Health, Transport and Finance have all failed; resulting in a callous government that is not taking care of its people.

“The sole objective of a government is not to raise taxes on its people, it is to provide for the people of a country, especially those who cannot provide for themselves – those who are disadvantaged; those young persons who are not working; the elderly; the senior citizens who have done their part in developing this country and making it what it is; and people with disabilities.”

Looking more closely at education and health, Hinkson further admonished, “The welfare and social fabric of this society have withered away. We are now paying for education at University, something unheard of. We are now paying more for health services in this country – the two major parts of any society. The health of a nation is the wealth of a nation and both parties have agreed that we would place education at the front burner, so that those born in poverty would have the opportunity to reach the top – just like any other born into wealth – but this has been undermined.”

Likewise, Candidate for Christ Church West Central, Adrian Forde, stated that the government is not doing well. With a special focus on the youth, Forde noted that they were largely being taken for granted. “You have a situation where the young people, especially the ones in Christ Church West Central are unemployed. The Minister is doing nothing for the young people in Christ Church West Central and Christ Church at large – nothing for their development. I understand what it is to help develop the young people in this country. I understand what it is for the government to give young people the opportunity to develop their talents, and skills, to be innovative so they can be craftsmen of their fate, and that it what the BLP understands.”

Additionally, drawing on a quote from a Former British Prime Minister, Forde stated that almost everything great in this world has been created by young people and that is why the BLP is giving the young people the opportunity to grow, develop and achieve their goals. (PRF)
