Best wishes for the Christmas season came from both sides of the Lower House yesterday as it went on break for the holidays.

Speaking on the adjournment, Leader of Government Business John Boyce said that this was the time of year for giving and to make others happy, especially the elderly and children.

“It is a time when families can come together and reflect on what is recognised as a very challenging social environment. It also signals the passing of another year in this wonderful experience called life and we give thanks for that event. Remember all that we have been able to achieve and in this year, a very special year for Barbados of course, remember the wonderful celebration of our turning 50,” he said.

“I take this opportunity to wish all Barbadians a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2017. I hope that we are able to face the challenges as well as we can and seek and find support wherever necessary,” he added.

Extending greetings on behalf of the Barbados Labour Party, Leader of the Opposition’s Business in the Lower House Santia Bradshaw encouraged Barbadians that as they enjoyed the holidays to ensure that they exercised some restraint in spending “and hold strain as to whatever announcements could be coming in the New Year”.

She also said it was important for Parliament itself to reflect on whether it was as efficient as it could be in doing the people’s business.

“As we go into 2017, wherever we have been deficient, wherever we have been inefficient, wherever there have been things that are clearly gaping in terms of doing better as a country and as a people, that we are able to do so as we approach 2017,” she said.

Speaker of the House, Michael Carrington, wished all Barbadians a joyful season, while encouraging them to remember the reason for the season and to reflect on the Christ child.

Parliament resumes on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 10 a.m. (JMB)
