It was certainly starting to look a lot like Christmas on Friday night at Wanstead Ridge Park in St. James.

The Seventh annual Carolling on the Green hosted by Member of Parliament for St James South, the Hon. Donville Inniss in association with the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) attracted hundreds of Barbadians.

It was a time for families and friends to come together to enjoy performances in song, dance and poetry, while enjoying the ambience of the park, which Minister Inniss described as one of the nicest and well-kept on the island. He said the idea was to bring some Barbadian family life and Christ back into Christmas.

“The concept is really to have a very relaxed evening centred around Christ and Christmas. We encouraged people to bring their blankets and chairs to just relax on the lawn, let the children run around and have fun, while the adults are entertained,” he told The Barbados Advocate.

This year’s Christmas concert featured the Royal Barbados Police Force Band, West Terrace Primary School Choir, Queen’s College School Choir and Orchestra, Haynesville Youth Group, Thorpes Cultural Group alongside the St. James South Community Choir, Samantha Leacock & Friends, Dancin Africa, among others.

“A few of us have had the view that Christmas can’t just be about shopping and spending long hours in the malls. We wanted to have a couple of hours where we can sit as a community with family, friends and neighbours – and this event has really grown in support. We have quite a number of people come out every year – the attendance is quite good; the performances are excellent and I think people leave quite satisfied.” (TL)
