Swan Street, a popular street for Christmas shoppers was busy with people as they took advantage of the special hours on Sunday, during the festive period.

Daring and dangerous: some of the young men showing off their risky dives from the Chamberlain Bridge in Bridgetown on Sunday.

With Christmas just a few days away, hundreds of locals and visitors alike flocked to Bridgetown to shop and explore the Capital.

Along the Chamberlain Bridge, visitors who came off the cruise ships could see some of the young residents of the City, diving from the bridge into the dark green waters of the Careenage. This spectacle resulted in many people stopping to take photographs of the young men as they jumped into the Wharf.

In the spirit of the season, there was a free Christmas concert in Independence Square hosted by the National Mental Health Commission. They sought to raise awareness about the organisation and raise monies for children affected by mental illness. Also, several visitors on their yachts had made the Careenage their harbour – some from as far as Switzerland and New Zealand.

Kiwis, Neil Anderson and his wife Gillian, told The Barbados Advocate it was their first time to the island, as they arrived last week on December 11. Neil Anderson explained that while in Barbados they had linked up with some friends and recently they had just come from the North of the island. He added that the chances of coming back to Barbados via yachting was not likely as it was a long distance.

On Broad Street, most stores and malls were opened including Cave Shepherd, Collins and the Norman Centre. By late evening, the crowds were starting to build in major shopping areas like Swan Street where shoppers could see the latest in toys, bags and clothes for the season.

For many shoppers, Sunday proved to be an ideal time to bring their children into Bridgetown to shop for those special gifts. Popular items bought by shoppers were household items, jewellery, and hair and beauty supplies.
