Five Barbadian nationals were the recipients of scholarships as part of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus’ celebration of Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence.
The scholarship winners were Ms. Kimberley E. Benjamin (Faculty of Law), Ms. Sherry-anne L. Felix, (Faculty of Social Sciences), Jennifer L. Hinds (Faculty of Social Sciences), Ms. Keturah E. Murray, (Faculty of Medical Sciences) won the undergraduate awards while Ms. Shernell Gittens, (Faulty of Medical Sciences) was the lone recipient of the Post Graduate award. The main criteria to be awarded the special scholarships were students needed to be Barbadian nationals, they needed to existing part or full-time students of UWI Cave Hill, maintained a GPA average of 3.00 or higher as well as participate and provide evidence of community involvement such as volunteerism.
Campus Registrar and Co-chair of Cave Hill Campus Committee: 50th Anniversary of Barbados’ Independence, Mr. Kenneth Walters highlighted the fact that in the past scholarship recipients were non-nationals and he encouraged the students to remind their colleagues about the many options available to local students through grants bursaries, scholarships to finance their tertiary education. The scholarships awarded to students will go towards their books, tuition and incidentals.
During the ceremony, it was announced by Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, Professor Eudine Barriteau that the UWI Cave Hill Campus and UWI Open Campus collaborated to provide Barbadian nationals of any age and had left school without certification another opportunity. This was made possible through 50 Back on Track awards and she said that the successful students were currently studying Mathematics and English (CXC) level at UWI Open Campus.
In addition, Humanities and Education Representative, Guild of Students 2016/2017, Chavier Cummins mentioned during her appreciation remarks, the role of the Guild in providing $10,500 in grants to eleven undergraduate and five post-graduate students on November 23.
Chief Executive Officer, Signia Financial and a donor to the scholarship programme, Paul Ashby, was given an opportunity to give some remarks about his corporate social responsibility to the Campus. As a graduate of Cave Hill, Mr. Ashby spoke about his support of the sports and education programmes at UWI and the importance of giving back. He ended by stating that he was pleased to be part of the initiative.
In addition to Signia, there was also a representative from Jordan’s Supermarket which also donated to the scholarship programme.
