Jubilee honourees announced

 FORTY-EIGHT deserving Barbadians were announced as the recipients of the Golden Jubilee Awards, ranging across the spectrum of endeavours.
 
With two more honourees left to be named, the revelation touched off the final stretch of the exciting build-up to Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence, being celebrated on Wednesday November 30th.
 
For entrepreneurship, Chairman of Williams Industries Limited, Ralph ‘Bizzy’ Williams was honoured. One of the most successful businessmen in the country, Williams has been a leading force in creating new industries and contributing greatly to the development of this island.
 
In the area of education, four veteran educators have earned the honour. They are Osbert McClean, former Principal and Head of the Men’s Educational and Support Association (MESA); Grantley Osbourne; Jennifer Sealy; and Ada Straughn.
 
Elkins Ward received recognition for his work in Science and Technology.
 
Charles Austin, Kenneth Blackman, Pat Brathwaite, Miguel Cummins, Anthony “The Mighty Gabby” Carter, Tony Grazette, Anthony Hinkson, Peggy McGeary, Richard Phillips, Jill Walker, Wayne Willock and Stedson ‘RPB’ Wiltshire earned the honours for the cultural arts.
 
Credit Union stalwart Oriel Doyle, along with Kenneth Hewitt and veteran businesswoman Mrs. Ram Mirchandani were honoured for their contribution to business. 
 
When The Barbados Advocate contacted Mirchandani, she expressed her joy at being recognised for her efforts over the years. 
 
“Barbados is a great country and I am happy…If you love this country and want to see it do well, then these things can happen. I love Barbados very much and I am humbled by the honour,” she said.
 
Others recognised for business included Williams Hinds, Dr. Arden Warner and Mrs. Marion Harte.
 
Veteran sports administrator Rawle Clarke, along with Tyrone Greene, Tyrone Mapp, noted surfer and businessman Brian Talma, and Cameron Smith topped the honours for Sports.
 
Mrs. Stephanie Bryan, Dr, Anthony Harris, Cardiologist Dr. Richard Ishmael, Dr. George Mahy and Dr. Harold Watson were all recognised in the area of  Medicine.
 
Civil society honourees were Edmund Bayley, Richard Goddard, Dr. David Rawlins, Keith Simmons, Carson Small, Outgoing CEO of the BHTA, Sue Springer, and Lt. Col (Rtd) Vere Springer.
 
Public Service honourees were Ltd Col. Neville Edwards, former Cabinet Secretary, Avril Gollop, Lionel Jordan and Elsworth Young.
 
The labour movement honourees included Patrick Frost, Clifford Mayers and Edwin Orlando Scott.
