Competitions usually divide people involved, but the staff at the Transport Board could not be any more united during their first Independence Competition.
Speaking during the competition held at their Headquarters in Weymouth yesterday morning, Lynda Holder, Managing, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager told The Barbados Advocate that the year had been a little rough on everyone so it was decided that they would have an employee-engaging event. She said that all the departments got together to plan something that would tie into the 50th anniversary celebrations.
She pointed out that the Transport Board was also celebrating 61 years of being an organisation and mentioned that they wanted to recognise this fact and still make reference to the Independence celebrations.
Holder said that the theme of the competition was “Then & Now” and a mystery judge would be by later to judge the five departments, Statistics, Washstand, Accounts, Administration and I.T and Marketing, that participated. The departments were to be judged based on their use of colour, the representation of independence, originality and historical content.
Some departments focused on the different milestones that the Transport Board achieved throughout the years, while others focused on things that were used in the past which are no longer popular now. The marketing department highlighted the humble beginnings of the Transport Board, making sure to make a mention of the horse and buggy which have been completely replaced by the big yellow and blue buses we see today. Holder said that the competition also served as a learning ground as it opened the eyes of people to the history of the Transport Board.
Holder said that the competition was one that truly brought the staff together and added that even though the drivers of the buses were unable to take part, they still showed their Independence spirit by wearing the national colours.
Sandra Forde, General Manager of the Transport Board expressed that she was proud of the way the competition brought her staff together and looked at it as a way to build the morale of the staff and continue the comradery that started at their staff award ceremony.
