Forde: Upgrade Road Traffic Act

THE Road Traffic Act must be upgraded to help stamp out the reckless behaviour of some motorcyclists.

Pointing to the incident that occurred between a group of motorcyclists and a motorist over the weekend, Opposition Member of Parliament Cynthia Forde said that the stunts being carried out by many of these cyclists on the nation’s roads showed that they have little regard for other road users and for their own lives.

Several videos have circulated on social media in recent times showing many of these cyclists ‘wheelie-ing’ in and around traffic, overtaking vehicles at high risk and riding at night with no lights.

Stressing that the police force were under pressure to deal with these instances, Forde insisted that some steps be taken to address the issue.

“When you have people who are riding in sixes and sevens and doing the wheelies in and between traffic and on sidewalks and on road reserves and so, it seems to me as though there is a madness about some of our people who care nothing about anybody, not even themselves; some do not even wear a helmet. Something has to be wrong.

“I would have felt better if now at Christmas time, we had some form of legislation to be able to upgrade that aspect of the Road Traffic Act to be able to make sure that these culprits are brought to justice. It is working the police officers hard. It is creating an element of fear in the hearts of other motorists and pedestrians and somehow most people are silent. It is wrong!” Forde asserted.

The MP for St. Thomas was speaking in Parliament during the debate on the compulsory acquisition of lands in Prince Road, Upper Collymore Rock, and urged for the Ministry of Public Works to fix the roads at Mount Misery, Airy Cot, Vaucluse and Endeavor with haste. (JMB)
