Centenarian Elma Timothy celebrates milestone

Centenarian, Elma Timothy, in conversation with Barbados’ Governor General, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave.

 

Barbados has a new centenarian.
 
Mrs. Elma Timothy celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday at home at Ventnor Gardens No. 2, Christ Church. She was surrounded by friends and family, some of whom travelled from the United States of America to be there.
 
The former Lieutenant with the Salvation Army Speightstown Corps also received a special visit from Barbados’ Governor General, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave. 
 
He engaged in a light-hearted conversation with the lady of the moment in addition to presenting her with birthday gifts of a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne, a floral bouquet and a birthday card.
 
The mother of eight, grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of over 16 was born in Panama and moved to Barbados at age three. She was in good spirits throughout the birthday celebrations.
 
Speaking about their mother, her children described her as a “loving individual” who did the best for them. Stories by two of her sons were also told about occasions when their mother shared lashes with a leather belt kept in her pocket. It was said that she shared these lashes with their best interest at heart, “out of love” and with a desire to see them “grow up the right way”. Both gentlemen admitted her wish was fulfilled.
 
Sharing fond memories of her granny, granddaughter Sonja Timothy described her as “the best cook ever and baker”. She additionally told the Governor General of her experience having rice and peas and stew from her grandmother’s home on Sundays. (MG)
